PUNE: It seems the southwest monsoon will keep its date this year too according to the forecast for the 2012 monsoon issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). According to the forecast, the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala will be on its normal date — June 1 — and, if so, it will gradually proceed towards Maharashtra by June 7.

MUMBAI: The much-awaited Rs 2,356 crore Mumbai Metro Line 1, which connects the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, is expected to be commissioned by November 2012. Nearly 85 per cent of the overall work has been completed and out of a total of Viability Gap Funding (VGF) grant of Rs 471 crore, the Central government has released Rs 235.50 crore.   The total length of the corridor is 11.40 km.

MUMBAI: "Satyamev Jayate", the much-talked about TV show of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, in its launch episode was viewed by 90 million people and was the highest rated show with 4.1 television rating (TVR), according to Television Audience Measurement (TAM) data.   The first episode, which talked about female foeticide, reached out to 2.67 crore viewers, reported TAM.

PUNE: The State government has revised the annual income limit for Economically Backward Class (EBC) from Rs 15,000 to Rs 1 lakh to enable their children avail concessions in educational fees.   The State cabinet approved the revision in its meeting on Wednesday.

MUMBAI: A week after he met Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, apprised him of the drought situation and demanded a relief of Rs 2,281 crore, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday said that he was hopeful of getting a helping hand from the Centre.   “So far we have received only assurances, but we are hopeful that the centre will provide us relief funds,” he asserted on Wednesday post a Cabinet meeting.

MUMBAI: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday morning conducted simultaneous surprise raids at four octroi plazas and four godowns in Mumbai, seizing 31 vehicles carrying goods and detained ten octroi officials for inquiries.   Officials said that the ACB had been working on information about a widespread octroi evasion racket being conducted in connivance between transporters and octroi officials for the last 15 days.
