The latest US sanctions against Iran signed by US President Barack Obama would bar foreign firms dealing with the Central Bank of Iran from access to the US financial system. That would hurt Iran's oil exports comprising 80 per cent of its revenues. The European Union has embargoed oil imports from Iran. The measures aim at forcing Iran to give up uranium enrichment and halt nuclear weapons pursuit.

My keyboard has been giving me trouble. May have something to do with a certain four-year-old who has been hammering away at it pretending to do "office work." While in junior college, I decided to attend an optional class. Mid-way through it, I happened to open a newspaper and began to scan the headlines. It took me quite some time to realise that the lecturer had stopped teaching and the class had turned its gaze on me. They were waiting for me to look up. When I finally did, I was suitably chastened without the teacher having said a word. I folded the newspaper and left the class red-faced.

On my way to Deccan Gymkhana on Friday, I was in my car waiting for the lights to turn green at Alka Chowk. I saw numerous two-wheeler riders coming up the wrong way from Alka into my lane. Alongside my car, across the divider, vehicles had made a third lane towards Deccan Gymkhana. I also noticed a policeman sitting on his motorcycle unconcerned by this blatant violation of traffic norms.

As member of a senior citizens' club in the city, I regularly attend the fortnightly meetings and other social events organised by it. Recently, I introduced myself to a new member. After normal pleasantries, he opened out. “I am 65 years old and I lost my wife two years ago. But for the feeling of loneliness, I am happily placed in life. My children are happily married, settled and look after me well but have their limitations.

Question: Spiritual wisdom-traditions glorify forgiveness as a virtue, but isn’t it impractical and foolish to forgive someone who repeatedly hurts us ?   Answer: When someone hurts us, forgiving the person is our best response. But often our emotions make us overlook the subtle but vital line that differentiates forgiving a person from trusting a person: forgiveness is for the past trust is for the future.

The sad state of the judicial system is clear in the huge pendency of cases across the courts in the country. Advocates complain that the quality of judgements is deteriorating. Persons of doubtful integrity are being elevated to high courts. Political parties favour establishment of a national judicial commission.

This happened less than two decades back. A jeep from the tehsildar's office arrived at Ralegan Siddhi to take social activist Anna Hazare to Parner town. The tehsildar's office had received a message from the Prime Minister's Office, seeking telephonic contact with the social activist. At that time, the electronic revolution was still some years away in future.
