ISHAQZAADE Director: Habib Faisal Starring: Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra and others Rating: * * *   A little girl in a small North Indian town of Almor is seen spewing rage at a group of boys following her school rickshaw. This one grows up to the sharp-tongued, political aspirant, who trades her jhumkas for a pistol — a very interesting character, who drives this film forward.

DARK SHADOWS Director: Tim Burton Starring: Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, and others Rating: * *   Tim Burton is one of the original and weird (in a good way) filmmakers in Hollywood, so it’s a little disconcerting that he chose to pick an old TV series to rehash, like so many in Hollywood are doing now, probably for lack of tempting original material.

HUGO Director: Martin Scorsese Starring: Ben Kingsley, Asa Butterfrield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen and others Rating: * * * *   Hugo comes to India a little late, but laden with awards and acclaim.   Someone called it Martin Scorsese’s love poem to the movies, which is an apt description.

JANNAT 2 Director: Kunal Deshmukh Starring: Emraan Hashmi, Randeep Hooda, Esha Gupta, Manish Chaudhary and others Rating: * *   If random clips of several Emraan Hashmi films were screened, you probably wouldn’t be able to identify the films — particularly those from the Vishesh Films stable. He starts as cocky and amoral, goes through a crisis and there’s anguish to express, sometimes redemption too.

THE LUCKY ONE Director: Scott Hicks Starring: Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Riley Thomas Stewart, Blythe Danner Rating: * 1/2   Zac Efron didn’t look half as kiddish while kissing 54-year-old Michelle Pfeifer in New Year’s Eve as he does in The Lucky One while making out with Taylor Schilling who happens to be half Pfeifer’s age.
