At the end of the 30-day deadline that the State government had set for the Pune Municipal Corporation to clear all footpaths in the city, the Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Pathak claimed to have removed most of the encroachments along the 591 kms of footpaths in the city. The photographs on this page are testimony to the fact that Pathak’s claim is very very far from the truth.

The recent abduction and murder of 16-year-old Shubham Shirke for ransom by three of his friends, two of whom are allegedly minors, shocked the city. Juvenile crimes in the city are rising and getting more serious. And they are not restricted to the economically weaker sections anymore. The official ambiguity over how to deal with minor offenders appears to be the main reason for this surge.

The Pune-Mumbai Expressway has deteriorated into a dangerous highway. Since 2005, this 95-km long Expressway has seen more than 10,000 accidents which have claimed nearly 650 lives and left hundreds more permanently disabled and maimed. There are several spots which have become particularly accident prone. These potential death traps, identified by authorities and activists, need to be rectified on priority.

The traffic branch of the Pune police is in the process of making helmets compulsory for all two-wheeler riders in the city. They are leading by example - all traffic policemen on bikes have started wearing helmets. Poor traffic conditions, indisciplined citizens, unruly drivers and bad roads lead to fatal accidents. Some of these fatalities could be prevented if two-wheeler users (both rider and pillion) use helmets. Sakàl Times reports.

The reason why facilities, amenities, infrastructure, safety and security in the city are not up to expectations is not because the municipal corporation does not have funds. It is because we the people do not elect persons who are competent and responsible enough to use these funds judiciously. And the reason why unsuitable people get elected is because irresponsible people do not vote.
