PUNE: Dr Cyrus S Poonawalla, chairman and managing director of Serum Institute of India Limited, which is the world’s largest DTP (Triple) and measles vaccine manufacturer, has been awarded the US Award for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health in recognition of his efforts to eradicate Rubella and Congenital Rubella Syndrome in America.
The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) presented him with this award.
Poonawalla has become the first Indian to receive this award.
He received the award in Washington from Dr Mirta Roses Periago, director of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).
Serum Institute of India has been supplying several hundred millions of doses to curb the scourge of Rubella (German Measles) and Measles to 38 regions in America, for the past 16 years, for routine immunisation as well as for mass campaigns.
