PUNE: Former vice-chancellor (V-C) of University of Pune (UoP), Dr B P Apte died here on Sunday morning after brief illness. He was 89 and is survived by wife, two daughters, son Ajit Apte, who is a corporator and director of PMPML.
Born on March 7, 1921 to freedom fighter couple of Pandurang and Radhabai, Apte completed his MBBS education from G S Medical College, Mumbai in 1943 with Gold medal in medicine. Later, he completed formal studies in surgery and joined the Sassoon Hospital as chief surgeon. Apte was appointed as vice-chancellor of University of Pune in 1970.
He chaired the state government committee on post graduate education during 1970-72.
Apte, who was a president of All India ENT Surgeon Association during 1966, was also a Asia representative on World ENT Surgeon Association for eight-years.
He was a Congress corporator with Pune Municipal Corporation during 1962 and also got elected on education board for the term of five-year.
Mayor of Pune Mohan Singh Rajpal, NCP leader Ankush Kakde were amongst those who paid last tribute to Apte at Vaikunth cemetery.
