PUNE: Maharashtra’s young brigade lost a crunch match against Mumbai in the T20 West Zone League on Sunday in Baroda.

Having beaten Gujarat and Saurashtra in their first two matches, Maharashtra had a chance to seal their berth in the knock-outs on Sunday, but they fell short by 15 runs.

The Rohit Motwani-led team are now in a must-win situation in their last league game against hosts Baroda on Monday.

The State bowlers continued their good show, and had Mumbai struggling at 7 for 3 inside first three overs. But that was followed by two half-century stands that brought Mumbai back in the game. Opener Paul Valthaty and keeper Aditya Tare added 63 for the fourth wicket, while Tare then was joined by Ankit Chavan, as the duo added 53 for the fifth wicket. Mumbai finished at 147 for 5, scoring 16 runs off the last over. The last over eventually proved to be decisive in the final outcome.

Maharashtra well within reaching the target as long as Kedar Jadhav was at crease to help.

But his 30-ball 47 innings was brought to an end by left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla, and the lower order just couldn’t handle the pressure after that. State were eventually bowled out for 132 with three balls to spare.
