Pune: A second year student of diploma in engineering Bhairav Nandkumar Desai (21) was murdered on late Thursday night. The police recovered the body of the victim from an open ground near Landge Vasti in Bhosari where he used to reside.

Three youths, accused of killing Bhairav, who studied at Jijau Engineering College at Landewadi in Bhosari, have been arrested. The gruesome murder, the second one in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area within a span of just 12 hours, raises serious doubts about the quality of policing in the industrial city.

Rahul Dinesh Sapkale (29), a resident of Gandhinagar in Pimpri, was shot dead near Hindustan Antibiotics Limited (HAL) Colony ground in Pimpri late on Thursday night. Two unknown assailants shot Sapkale, at point blank range.

Police said that Bhairav was hacked to death with sharp weapons and stones by three youths.
Some of the locals found Bhairav's body lying on the open ground and called up the police control room and informed about the corpse.

The assistant commissioner (Pimpri Division) of police Shivaji Shelar who visited the spot said that three persons have been arrested in connection with the murder. They include Akshay Suresh Hadavale (21), Sumit Ashok Pokharkar ( 19) and Dattatreya Laxman Gunjal (19), all residents of Dhawade Vasti in Bhosari.

Bhairav had molested Hadavale's sister which angered Hadavale who was looking to revenge the act. Hadavale, Pokharkar and Gunjal came together and killed Bhairav when he was drinking liquor at a secluded spot in Dhawade Vasti, police claimed.

"The trio dragged him and took him to the open ground on Thursday night. They attacked him with sharp weapons, inflicted deep wounds on his head and stomach. They later smashed his head with big stones and escaped, " Shelar added.
