Ever been a couch potato binge-watching a series just because you can’t wait to know what happens next? Here’s a list of reasons why I can’t get enough of it….

Character depth: There is nothing black and white here, it’s all shades of grey. Various forums, pages, blogs discussing Walter White, Sherlock, Dan Scott are a testimony to the depths of their characters.

Audacity: Be it the in-your-face-ness of Game of thrones or the blood and gore of Spartacus, these daring shows definitely do not believe in protecting their viewers from the evil surrounding them. (Read: The massacre of the Starks)

Reasearch: From the gnarly medical complications of Grey’s Anatomy to the complex deductions of Sherlock, the amount of research that goes into them is mind boggling, to say the least. Listen to Sheldon (The Big Bang Theory) explaining rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock “Scissors cuts paper, paper covers rock, rock crushes lizard, lizard poisons Spock, Spock smashes scissors, scissors decapitates lizard, lizard eats paper, paper disproves Spock, Spock vaporizes rock, and as it always has, rock crushes scissors.”  Or, want to identify a pilot by his left thumb? Watch Sherlock.

The Chemistry: From the chemistry between Castle and Kate, Barney and Robin, Lucas and Peyton, Cersei and Jaime Lannister, Harvey and Donna to the chemistry of Breaking Bad, they burn the screen every time they appear on it (sometimes literally!).

Snappy dialogues: “Any Tom, Dick and Harry could just walk right into your office,” says Louis after Harvey enters and sees Louis waiting for him in his office. “I don’t know about Tom and Harry but….”, strikes Harvey. May it be through Harvey Spector of Suits or Barney Stinson of How I Met Your Mother (Read: “Suit Up!”), the catchy dialogues are legen-wait for it-dary, legendary.

That One Character: Barney Stinson, Spartacus, Tyrion Lannister, Walter White, Sherlock, Frank Underwood, Sheldon Cooper, Castle. Enough said.

The Woman:  Sherlock dancing at the whims of The Woman, Dragon born Daenerys Targaryen unleashing her dragons upon the slave lord, Jessica Pearson toying with Harvey and Mike. Gone are the days where shows ran at the mercy of their male starpower, here the males run at the mercy of some serious female powerhouses.

My Current Addiction: True Detective. This 4 episode old series is dark, brooding and sinister, watch it if dark, black humour clubbed with cinematic excellence intrigues you.
