French artist Edgar Degas had once said, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” And Pune-based Vilas Kulkarni will not only make you see, but also guide you to paint it one step at a time.
Kulkarni’s recently published book, 10 Landscapes Step By Step, gives a detailed account of how to proceed in painting an exact replica of a photograph. “It’s not just for beginners, but for everyone who is interested in art,” he says.
Kulkarni started painting waterscapes in 2004. “It wasn’t my profession. I had my own business which was doing really well. But I happened to come across the book Watercolour by artist Milind Mulick. I was enchanted by the idea of painting. I gave up my business and became a full-time artist, dedicating myself to learning the finer nuances from Mulick himself,” he adds.
Completely engrossed in his fascination for art, he started painting passionately and by 2007 was conducting workshops in watercolour painting for beginners along with Mulick. “I even went with him to conduct a workshop in Dubai around two years ago,” he says with pride.
He has dedicated his first book to his guru Milind Mulick.
Kulkarni also displays his paintings at shows on a regular basis. His latest exhibition, which is on at Art2Day Gallery near Golibar Maidan, is open to all art lovers till January 31.
