PUNE: The Commonwealth Games (CWG) organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi on Thursday refuted all allegations of misuse of funds for the CWG. “All the venues are ready,” he stated.
“I haven’t done anything wrong. My responsibility is only for the Rs 1,600 crore, which is the budget for the actual conduct of the game. I can give full details of that amount, and I am ready to face any enquiry in this regard,” Kalmadi said at a press meet in the city on Thursday.
“The other Rs 30 to 40 thousand crores, which is the budget for construction of venues, roads, airport, etc, is not my concern. It’s true that I am supposed to monitor that part also, but that money is not my problem,” he added.
Kalmadi also denied repeated media allegations that the venues for the games are still not completely ready. “Every single venue is ready. I request you to come to the venues yourself and take a look. We have built world-class stadia. The hockey stadium is the best in the world. I have no doubts that we will deliver the best ever Commonwealth Games,” he said. “The opening ceremony would be better than the Beijing Olympics in 2008,” he added.
Kalmadi also opined that the Delhi Games would be a financial success. “Roughly, the government has given us Rs 1100 crores so far, and we have been able to earn nearly Rs 700 crores, through television rights and other sponsorships.” “The ticket sales have just started, and I am sure they will pick up with time. The Rs 1600 crore that the government is allocating to the organising committee is like a loan, and I would try to repay as much of it as possible,” he said.
Kalmadi also said that the organising committee has not been accused of any wrongdoing. “The CVC report has asked certain questions about use of funds in constructions. There is not a single question about the organising committee. We are very clean, and I actually want to face an enquiry. Because I want to clear my name,” he said.
