MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan today said the state government will set up a committee to bifurcate universities in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Durgadevi Institute of Management Studies of the Rajasthani Sammelan here, he said the quality of higher education was suffering as existing state universities were loaded with affiliated colleges. It has become essential to bifurcate these universities. A special committee will be setup in this regard.
He said the state government also proposed to introduce two new legislations-- Private University Bill and Maharashtra Technical University Bill in the legislature.
Plans were also afoot to set up a medical college under public private partnership in the western suburbs.
Mr Ashok Saraf, President of Rajasthani Sammelan Group of Educational Institutions, said it was planning to collaborate with international universities to generate pool of talent with global perspective.
''We at DSIMS will be adopting a pedagogical approach that goes beyond the University curriculum and prepares students for facing the challenges of the corporate world,'' he added.
The state government has sanctioned 15 new Management Institutes, Minister for State Higher and Technical Education Rajesh Tope said.
''The initiative has been undertaken to curb the dearth of management institutes in the state of Maharashtra,'' he added.
Tope said to ensure quality institutions thrive in the state, the government will make accreditation compulsory for affiliated colleges and legislation would be enacted in this regard.
Chavan also urged the State Universities to set up incubation centres on the lines of similar centres set up by Indian Institutes of Technology and other international learning centres such as Harvard and Stanford.
