PUNE: The shocking death of the 23-year old 2nd year Symbiosis telecom management student on Monday evoked a sharp reaction from the nearly 1000-strong resident student community in the Lavale campus on Tuesday.

The agitated students refused to attend classes throughout the day and presented a memorandum of demands to the Symbiosis Principal director Dr Vidya Yeravdekar who addressed the students later in the day.

While the Symbiosis management had stated on Monday that the cardiac ambulance had reached the student within 8 minutes, the students’ contention is that it took more than 25 minutes to reach. The Symbiosis management has responded by immediately ordering an investigation into the discrepancy that has arisen over the statement made by the medical staff on the campus and the allegation made by the students.

Meanwhile, the agitating students demanded better medical facilities and “better qualified doctors” including a lady doctor on the campus; medical insurance cards and clear disclosure Of what is covered; each student should get a copy of their medical record; and a health centre which functions 24-hours.

The students have also demanded that the management should have a tie-up with a hospital closer than the one to which the deceased student was taken. They said, the emergency contact numbers on the reverse of their ID cards are not functional.

A section of the students told Sakal Times that they were dismayed as none of the authorities accompanied the parents of the deceased boy when they went to take possession of his body.
