PUNE: Monsoon is in full swing and it has brought relief to the citizens with water cuts being suspended in the city. Widespread rainfall in catchments has filled the Khadakwasla dam up to 52.51 per cent while the city recorded 37 mm rainfall and Lohegaon 30 mm till Monday evening.
As on Monday evening, there was 6.67 TMC water in the 29 TMC capacity Khadakwasla grid, comprising four dams - Temghar (3.60 TMC), Warasgaon (12.82 TMC), Panshet (10.65 TMC) and Khadakwasla (1.97 TMC). The water level in dams has been rising slowly, but steadily, taking the total water storage in the gird to 22.96 per cent on Monday. On the same date last year, the water storage in the grid (July 26, 2009) was 16.67 TMC (57 per cent).
Meanwhile, the city is also proceeding to achieve July's mean total rainfall (187.2 mm). Till the evening of July 26, the monthly rainfall in the city had crossed 140 mm. The state as a whole received widespread rainfall, with the rainfall (in cm) in different cities being recorder was: Mahabaleshwar - 29, Ratnagiri - 9, Panaji - 8, Satara, Vengurla, Wardha and Kolhapur - 7 each, as per the weather report issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD) on its website.
The highest rainfall recorded at some other locations includes Mandangarh, Khed and Chiplun (in Ratnagiri district) - 15.7, 14.6 and 12.5 respectively; Nandurbar - 7.2, Gaganbavada, Radhanagari and Shahuwadi (in Kolhapur district) - 22, 19 and 10 respectively.
The weatherman said that the low pressure area over north Madhya Pradesh and the offshore trough from south Gujarat coast to Karnataka coast persisted on Monday as well. Moreover, a fresh low pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood around within next 48 hours. Hence, widespread rains would occur over Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra.
