Six killed as "Laila" pounds Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Six people, including a young woman software engineer, were killed in rain related incidents in Tamil Nadu since last night, even as the cyclonic storm "Laila" battered the Coastal areas in Northern parts of Tamil Nadu, Chennai city and its suburbs.

 

The storm was expected to cross the Andhra coast tomorrow morning.

 

Police said a 24-year-old software engineer Tejavathi, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, was electrocuted when she stepped into a snapped overhead tension wire at suburban Velacherry this morning.

 

The woman, working in a computer firm on the ECR and residing at Velacherry, was walking on the road, when she failed to notice the snapped wire, which was submerged in water, resulting in the tragedy.

 

A report from Ramanathapuram said, a 52-year-old man Muthulingam drowned in sea, when he was trying to retrieve his boat which capsized after it was hit by a high tide and swirling waves at Thirupalakkudi village.

 

A five-year-old girl was electrocuted at Pattukottai when she came into contact with a livewire.

 

Three people had died in rain-related incidents last night, with two deaths reported from Karur and one from Dindugul district.
