MUNBAI: On hindsight, it is always better to put things into proper perspective. What if Anand had found the accurate plan and the structure with which a draw was possible in Game eight on Tuesday.
Anand blundered and lost late night on Tuesday when a draw looked like the obvious result? Would’nt it have been better to press for a victory when Anand had double whites in Game six and seven and decide the title issue once and for all? Shouldn’t Anand have opted for a different Opening than the Slav Defence in Game 8?
Innumerable suggestions and advice have been posted on various websites for Viswanathan Anand after his loss in Game eight of the ongoing World Chess Championship at Sofia, Bulgaria.
However, the question uppermost in everyone’s mind is whether Veselin Topalov will make one of his famous come backs once again when it matters most in this event?
The Match is evenly poised now, with the scores level at 4-4 and four more games to be played.
It is almost like the Match is starting afresh with both players having two Whites each. If the scores are tied after 12 games, then the winner will be decided on tie-break games on May 13.
Anand had struck with Black pieces twice against Kramnik in the World Chess Championship at Bonn last time and now might just be the time to unveil some of his sharper preparation with Black.
So far the results in all decisive games have favoured White. So will the players show a different preparation or raise the game to a different level when playing with Black? So far what we have seen are theoretical discussions, in the Catalan four times, and thrice in the Slav Defence and the Grunfeld Defence by Anand in the disastrous first game.
On Thursday in the ninth game, Anand will be wielding White pieces and hopefully would have shrugged off the defeat in the eighth game, just like he did in the second game.
