PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation on Monday announced a Rs 1. 5 cr relief and rehabilitation package for the victims of the fire that gutted the slum area near Market yard.

As part of the rehab scheme, the PMC has opened a transit camp at Sant Namdeo School in Maharshi nagar, where it will provide affected people with essential goods.

The PMC is not going to rebuild the houses. ``But we will provide tin sheds, and other material that the people may need. The houses will have to be rebuilt by the house owners themselves," municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade told reporters this afternoon.

The district collector has announced a compensation of Rs 1000 per head to those injured, subject to Rs 5000 per family.

NGOs and social organisations who wish to distribute food are welcome, Zagade has said.

The commissioner, however, kept mum on a suggestion by Shiv Sena leader Sham Deshpande, that most of slum area housed illegal godwons, stocking the wares of nearby shops. The commissioner said the PMC had submitted a proposal for slum development under the Rajiv Ganghi Awas Yojna of the Central government, which if approved would change the face of the city. The Yojna is basically meant to make urban India free of slums.
