NEW DELHI: As parliament resumes its budget session Thursday, a united opposition is all set to corner the government on the April 6 Dantewada massacre, price rise and Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor's involvement in an ugly IPL row.
Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said they would focus on the massacre of 76 security personnel by Maoists and demand that the question hour be suspended for a debate and a statement from the government over the issue.
BJP's Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde said a notice of suspension of the question hour will be given to Speaker Meira Kumar.
Munde said that the decision to demand a debate over the Chhattisgarh carnage was taken at a meeting of NDA leaders at the residence of L.K. Advani Wednesday.
He said notices by party members for cut motions against the finance bill would also be given when the finance bill is taken up for consideration and passage.
Left parties are also up in arms against the government over hike in fuel prices and rising inflation.
The Communist parties and other non-NDA and non-UPA groups have also threatened to move cut motions against the finance bill whose passage is a major worry for the government.
Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj has said the party won't hesitate to vote against the government, irrespective of which party's cut motion is taken up.
If the cut motion is brought in, it would mean that the Congress-led ruling coalition will have to work harder to ensure that its thin majority is not eroded by absence of ruling party members.
Tharoor's alleged involvement in an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, which has snowballed into a major political row, is also likely to dominate the parliament proceeding with the BJP and the Left parties demanding his resignation.
The two houses of parliament are meeting Thursday to resume the ongoing budget session after a nearly month long break.
