PUNE: Students who will be appearing for SSC exams this year will be admitted to junior colleges based on aggregate of five top scored subjects, provided they pass in all subjects,  Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has clarified in a press communique. The board has sought feedback on the scheme.

In the communique issued on Monday, secretary of the board T N Tupe has furnished details of the Best of Five option.

He has clarified that this scheme will be implemented only for admissions to junior colleges and will not be applicable for passing SSC exam.

“Best of Five will be applicable to regular students appearing for all subjects and repeaters with all mandatory subjects. The existing rules for passing each subject are very much applicable despite this scheme. Mark lists will show marks and grades in each subject.

However total percentage score will be calculated based on five top scores instead of percentage of six mandatory subjects,” states this circular.

For admission to science stream in class XI, the condition of minimum 40 marks is still in vogue.

Other concessions, schemes for sports persons, children with disabilities are also intact, says the circular.

Best of Five formula for admissions to junior colleges will bring students of state board on par with students of CBSE and ICSE as the latter also have the same procedure to arrive at final marks percentage of students.

State education department’s earlier schemes to bring normalisation of marks between various boards by percentile formula and 90:10  per cent quota were scrapped by the Bombay High Court.

While scrapping the 90:10 scheme, the court had termed the state government’s proposal as ‘unconstitutional’ and with a few months left to new academic year, school education department is hard pressed to find a formula that will stand through the court trials.

SEND FEEDBACK BEFORE FEB 15

The board has invited feedback from stakeholders on Best of Five scheme. Students, parents, educationists, NGOs can mail their feedback to best5@msbshse.ac.in or send them to board's office near Balchitravani, Behind Agharkar Research Institute, Bhamburda, Shivajinagar, Pune 411004, before Feb 15.

Sameer's difficulty can be taken care by the following suggestion. Mr. P G Vaidya, a great educationist of Pune, was a staunch advocate of removal of Pass / Fail remark. I think, in addition to this step, the admission should be based on marks in "relevant" subjects "only". This liberty, will greatly reduce tensions among students and prevent them from taking extreme step of suicide. Sameer, spread this message, feel free to have my email address from editor.

As a science educationist, I believe that the admission to Science stream must be based on marks in 1) science, 2) maths, 3) geography, 4) environmental science and 5) English. It should not be based on any five subjects, Geography and EVS are very important subjects and deserve to be separate subjects.
