PUNE: A fact-finding committee has been set up by Deccan Education Society's (DES) Fergusson Law College here to go into the allegations of ragging levelled by parents of a second year law student who committed suicide.

Prashant Chitalkar, who stayed in college hostel doing his LLB degree course, had been abstaining since December 1 last year. He jumped into a well at his hometown Rahuri in neighbouring Ahmednagar district on January 25, leading to a police complaint by his father alleging that his son was a victim of ragging by seniors in the college.

Vikas Kakatkar, Chairman of DES, which runs the law college, told reporters today that the management had decided to set up the committee in response to a letter received from police asking it about the action taken in respect of the incident and media reports.

The complaint filed with Rahuri police has named four students of the same college by Prashant's father Bandopant Chitalkar, who has also levelled torture charge. "The student or his parents had not given any oral or written complaint to the college authorities about alleged ragging on the premises. We will fully cooperate with police in the investigations and punishing those who are found guilty," Kakatkar said. Three of the four students named in the complaint are studying in second year LLB and one was in the final year of the law course, he added.
